CARE OF CANVAS AWNINGS
The life and good looks of your canvas awning depend a great deal on the way you use them, and how you care for them. Your awning will be made from the finest awning fabric available. We use only the best water repellents and mildew retardants in our awning fabrics, and you can rely on our experience and craftsmanship. Even the most durable materials require a certain amount of care, and fabric awnings are no exception. Mildew is very unpredictable and will grow on anything. For that reason it's important that you keep your awnings clean. With only the minimum amount of attention, your awnings will remain bright and serviceable for a long period of time. The following do's and don'ts are presented to help you in the proper care of your awnings. The life and beauty of an awning can be preserved by following these suggestions and general tips.
SOME DO'S
Do keep your awnings clean. This is the best protection against mildew. Even on mildew resistance fabric, mildew can grow on accumulated dirt or foreign materials which remain on the top or bottom surface and eventually damage or stain the fabric. We cannot be responsible for such damage.
Do hose your awning down occasionally, every month or so with a garden hose. We recommend to do this on a hot, sunny day. The vinyl surface is washable, using a mild soap solution and rinsing immediately.
Do keep the underside of your awning clean by simply brushing with a clean household broom. Mildew will not attack a clean awning.
Do keep shrubbery and vines away from the awnings, as many bushes contain an acid which can be harmful to your awnings.
Do check the condition of awning frames. Rust is not likely to form, but if it should, it might cause deterioration or staining of the fabric. Painting metal framing every 4 or 5 years is a safeguard against this.
Do double your cleaning efforts if the awning is under any type foliage that allows sap to fall on the fabric.
Do inquire about the low cost of having your awning frames recovered with bright, new fabrics when present awnings are beyond repair.
Do inquire about having your awnings cleaned on a regular basis by a professional awning cleaning person.
SOME DON'TS
Do not fold or roll in extreme temperatures.
Do not drag your awning across any abrasive surfaces, such as a cement drive.
Do not get insect spray on the fabric, as some solutions may impair the water repellency of the fabric and cause staining.
Do not allow water to stand on the awnings, causing pocketing and possible stretching.
Do not overlook small rips or tears. If a sharp object punctures the fabric, it can be expertly repaired by your local fabricator.
Do not wash your awnings with a harsh or strong cleaning solution, such as vigorously with an abrasive cleaner.
Do not force or yank your awnings when raising or lowering them, do it gradually.
Do not leave any retractable type awning extended during rain or heavy wind as they are for sun protection only.
Do not charcoal grill under the awning.
Do not store awnings when damp or wet. Mildew is fabrics greatest foe and is caused by dampness. Mildew may grow on the surface of a damp awning and permanently stain fabric.
Do not permit leaves, twigs, etc., to remain on you awning as they might cause a staining of the fabric.
With proper care, your canvas awnings should continue to look bright and new and give you many years of service.
